Portrait of Duke John Frederick of Württemberg (1582-1628), oil on canvas, 53 x 42 cm, framed,
John Frederick, the son of Frederick I and Princess Sibylla of Anhalt, became the governing duke of Württembeg in 1608. In 1609 he married Barbara Sophia of Brandenburg. The duke was known as a benevolent and peace-loving person, but was reputed to be a weak sovereign. In 1608 he joined the Protestant Union, so that he and his country became involved in the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War. The present picture probably figured in a later gallery of ancestors or regents of the Württemberg family. Pendant to following lot.
